How it's calculated
- Basic pay comes from the academic pay matrix in the MHRD letter of 2 November 2017 (corrected 8 November 2017).
- DA, HRA and Transport Allowance follow the Department of Expenditure's orders for central government employees, as the Ministry's order of 28 January 2019 directs for central universities. DA is 60% now.
- All Academic Levels (10 and above) get the Transport Allowance of "Level 9 and above".
- NPS: 10% of basic + DA, for teachers covered by the National Pension System.

Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary of an Assistant Professor under the 7th Pay Commission?
Basic pay starts at ₹57,700 (Academic Level 10). With DA at 60%, HRA for an X-class city and Transport Allowance, gross pay is ₹1,21,150 a month, or ₹1,11,918 after NPS, before income tax.
What are Academic Levels 10, 11 and 12?
They are the three stages of an Assistant Professor. The MHRD letter of 2 November 2017 places Assistant Professors previously on Academic Grade Pay ₹6,000, ₹7,000 and ₹8,000 at Academic Levels 10, 11 and 12, with entry pay of ₹57,700, ₹68,900 and ₹79,800.
Do university teachers get the same DA, HRA and Transport Allowance as central government employees?
For Central Universities, their colleges and centrally funded deemed universities, yes. The Ministry’s order of 28 January 2019 revised teachers’ allowances under the Department of Expenditure’s 7th CPC orders, and UGC forwards each DA order to these universities for action.
Does this apply to state university and college teachers?
Not automatically. States may adopt the UGC pay scheme with their own orders, and their DA and HRA rates are set by the state. Check your state government’s order.
How often does an Assistant Professor get an increment?
Each annual increment moves you one cell down your Academic Level. Each cell is 3% more than the one above it, rounded to the nearest ₹100.
Why were some matrix figures corrected?
The Ministry issued a corrigendum on 8 November 2017 fixing three cells in the original table: Level 12 cell 3 (₹84,700), Level 13A cell 16 (₹2,04,700) and Level 14 cell 9 (₹1,82,700). This calculator uses the corrected figures.
