CTET marking and qualifying marks
CTET Paper I is for teaching classes I to V and Paper II for classes VI to VIII; a candidate intending to teach both levels sits both papers. Each paper has 150 multiple-choice questions of one mark, and the official bulletin states plainly that there is no negative marking, so an unattempted question and a wrong one cost the same.
The qualifying bar is 60% — 90 marks out of 150 — for general candidates, with relaxation for reserved categories as the bulletin sets out. A CTET certificate is an eligibility qualification, not an appointment: recruitment happens separately through state and school recruitment notices.
The marking scheme and qualifying marks used here come from the CBSE information bulletin for the current cycle, linked on the calculator page with the date it was last checked.
UGC NET: qualifying twice over
UGC NET is not a single pass mark. You first have to reach an aggregate of 40 per cent across Paper I and Paper II (35 per cent for reserved categories), and that only makes you eligible to be considered. The awards themselves go to the top 6 per cent of the candidates who cleared that bar, counted separately for each subject and category — so the mark that actually qualifies moves with the field and is not known in advance.
There is no negative marking in either paper: every right answer is worth 2 and a wrong one costs nothing, which makes leaving a question blank strictly worse than answering it. TheUGC NET marks calculator adds the two papers and checks your aggregate against the 40 or 35 per cent minimum.
The two results the exam can give are different things. Assistant Professor eligibility has no upper age limit at all. The Junior Research Fellowship does — not more than 30 years on the crucial date, with relaxation by category — so a candidate can qualify for one and not the other on age alone. Once appointed, pay follows the UGC academic pay matrix rather than the ordinary 7th CPC matrix, which is whyassistant professor salary has its own calculator.
