What the SSC notices have in common

Four exams, one commission, and a few rules that apply across all of them.

The Staff Selection Commission recruits for posts across central government ministries, and the exam you sit depends on the pay level of the post rather than the subject. Combined Graduate Level covers Levels 4 to 8, Combined Higher Secondary Level covers Levels 2 to 5, Constable (GD) is Level 3 and Multi Tasking Staff is Level 1. Because the level fixes the basic pay, two posts with very different titles can pay exactly the same.

Age is counted on a crucial date, not on the application date. Each notice prints its own: SSC CGL and CHSL count age on 1 August 2026, while Constable (GD) counts it on 1 January 2026. A birthday falling after the crucial date does not help you, and one falling before it can put you outside the limit.

The penalty differs by tier, not by exam. Tier-I of CGL and CHSL takes off 0.50 for a wrong answer and Tier-II takes off 1, while Constable (GD) takes off 0.25 and the MTS first session takes off nothing at all. Since papers are sat in several shifts on different days, the Commission then normalises marks across shifts, so the score the answer key gives you is not the score that decides the cut-off — the normalization calculator shows how that adjustment works.
