How central government pay is built up

The same four parts, in the same order, whatever the post.

Central government pay starts from one figure: the cell of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix that your level and stage put you in. The matrix has 19 levels, and every other part of your salary is worked out from the basic pay in that cell.

Dearness Allowance is a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year. The rate in force is 60%, with effect from 1 January 2026. House Rent Allowance depends on the class of city you are posted in, X, Y or Z, as listed in the Department of Expenditure's order.Transport Allowance depends on your level and on whether the city is one of those notified for the higher rate. What reaches your account is what is left after NPS and the deductions your office applies.

So the calculators here follow that order. Start with the 7th Pay Commission salary calculator for the whole figure, or open the pay matrix to find a cell. The DA calculator works out the allowance on its own and shows the rate history, and the NPS calculator takes it forward to the corpus and pension at retirement. Teaching posts use a separate academic matrix, so they have their ownassistant professor salary calculator.

Every figure comes from the order that set it, listed with the date it was checked on each calculator's page.
