How it's calculated
- Basic pay: your cell in the 7th CPC pay matrix.
- DA: 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026.
- HRA: 30% (X), 20% (Y) or 10% (Z) of basic pay, but not less than ₹5,400, ₹3,600 or ₹1,800. These rates apply because DA has crossed 50%.
- Transport Allowance: Level 9 and above ₹7,200 /₹3,600; Levels 3–8 ₹3,600 /₹1,800; Levels 1–2 ₹1,350 /₹900 (higher-TA cities / other places), plus DA on it. Level 1 and 2 employees drawing basic pay of ₹24,200 or more get ₹3,600 / ₹1,800 (OM dated 2 August 2017).
- NPS: 10% of basic pay + DA, for employees covered by the National Pension System.

Frequently asked questions
How is 7th Pay Commission salary calculated?
Gross pay = basic pay + DA (60% of basic now) + HRA (30%, 20% or 10% of basic by city class) + Transport Allowance with DA on it. In-hand pay = gross minus deductions such as the 10% NPS contribution.
What is the in-hand salary for Level 7?
At Level 7 entry pay (₹44,900) in an X-class city with the higher Transport Allowance, gross pay is ₹91,070 and in-hand pay after NPS is ₹83,886 a month at DA 60%, before income tax and other deductions.
How do I know if my city is X, Y or Z?
The Department of Expenditure lists X and Y cities in the annexure to its HRA order of 7 July 2017. Every place not in the list is Z. The list is on this page.
Why are income tax and other deductions not included?
Income tax depends on your regime, investments and other income, and deductions such as CGHS or society dues vary by person. Add them in "Other deductions" if you know them.
I live in government accommodation. Do I get HRA?
No. HRA is not paid to employees who are given government accommodation. Tick the box and the calculator leaves HRA out.
Does this work for past months?
You can choose any DA rate from July 2024 onwards. For earlier months, the HRA rate depends on how DA stood against the 25% and 50% thresholds, so check the orders for that period.
