How it's calculated
The bulletin sets the JRF limit as "not more than 30 years" on 1 December 2026. The calculator works out your age on that date, adds your relaxation (capped at 5 years in total), and compares.
Estimate only. Official results, marks and eligibility are decided by the National Testing Agency. Verify on the official website.
Worked example: a woman candidate born 10 March 1993
Age on 1 December 2026: 33 years 8 months. With the 5-year relaxation for women, the limit is 35 years, so she is within the JRF age limit.
How we read "not more than 30 years"
The bulletin does not print a date-of-birth range for this rule, and "not more than 30 years" can be read two ways: "has not turned 30 plus a day" or "has not turned 31". So the calculator shows three results:
- Within the limit: at most exactly 30 (plus relaxation) on 1 December 2026. Eligible on either reading.
- Unclear: older than that but not yet 31 (plus relaxation). Confirm with NTA before relying on it.
- Over the limit: 31 (plus relaxation) or older on that date. Not eligible on either reading.
JRF: 'Not more than 30 years as on 01st day of the month in which the examination is concluded i.e. 01.12.2026.' Up to 5 years for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third gender and women; research experience up to 5 years; LL.M. 3 years; armed forces service up to 5 years; total relaxation not more than 5 years. No upper age limit for Assistant Professor or PhD admission. The bulletin gives no date-of-birth range for 'not more than 30 years'.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UGC NET JRF age limit for December 2026?
Not more than 30 years as on 1 December 2026 (the first day of the month in which the exam ends), with up to 5 years’ relaxation. There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor or PhD admission.
Who gets age relaxation for JRF?
Up to 5 years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and third gender candidates and for women; research experience up to 5 years; 3 years for LL.M. holders; armed forces service up to 5 years. The total cannot be more than 5 years.
I turn 30 before December 2026. Can I apply for JRF?
If you were born on or after 1 December 1996, you are at most 30 on 1 December 2026 and qualify on any reading of the rule. If you were born between 2 December 1995 and 30 November 1996, you are 30 and some months; the bulletin says "not more than 30 years" without a date-of-birth range, so confirm with NTA before relying on it.
Can women get the 5-year relaxation?
Yes. The bulletin gives up to 5 years’ relaxation to women applicants, the same as for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and third gender candidates.
Can I add research experience to category relaxation?
The grounds can be combined, but the total relaxation cannot exceed 5 years. A woman or reserved-category candidate already gets 5 years, so research experience adds nothing more.
