Uses the marking scheme in the official notification. Official scores may be normalised.

How it's calculated

Section score = (Right × marks per question) − (Wrong × penalty) Total = sum of sections

Unattempted questions score zero. Fractions are kept exact and the total is rounded once, to two decimals.

Estimate only. Official results, marks and eligibility are decided by the National Testing Agency. Verify on the official website.

Worked example: JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.)

Mathematics, Section A (MCQ): 16 right, 2 wrong; Mathematics, Section B (numerical value): 4 right, 0 wrong; Physics, Section A (MCQ): 16 right, 2 wrong; Physics, Section B (numerical value): 4 right, 0 wrong; Chemistry, Section A (MCQ): 16 right, 2 wrong; Chemistry, Section B (numerical value): 4 right, 0 wrong. Total: 234 out of 300.

Frequently asked questions

What is the negative marking in JEE Main 2026?

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.): +4 for a right answer, −1 for a wrong one.

What are the total marks in JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.)?

300 marks: Mathematics, Section A (MCQ) (20 questions), Mathematics, Section B (numerical value) (5 questions), Physics, Section A (MCQ) (20 questions), Physics, Section B (numerical value) (5 questions), Chemistry, Section A (MCQ) (20 questions), Chemistry, Section B (numerical value) (5 questions).

Is an unattempted question marked negatively?

No. Only wrong answers carry a penalty. A question left blank scores zero.

How do I count my right and wrong answers?

Compare your responses with the official answer key published by the exam body. Count only the questions you marked: those matching the key are right, the rest are wrong.

Is there negative marking in JEE Main numerical questions?

Yes. The 2026 bulletin applies +4 for a correct answer and −1 for an incorrect one in both Section A (MCQs) and Section B (numerical value). Numerical answers must be entered as the nearest integer.

Does my JEE Main raw score decide my rank?

Not directly. NTA converts raw marks to a percentile (NTA score) within your shift, takes the better of your two session scores, and ranks on that. Use the percentile calculator to see what a percentile means.
